  18. <p>     Violent hatemongering can be an expensive hobby. That's the
  19. message of a $12.5 million verdict handed down in Portland,
  20. Ore., last week against television repairman Tom Metzger, his
  21. son John, their national racist organization White Aryan
  22. Resistance, and two of the three partying skinhead punks who,
  23. incited by WAR, arbitrarily bludgeoned a 27-year-old Ethiopian
  24. man to death two years ago.

  26. <p>     Victorious lawyer Morris Dees, whose Alabama-based Southern
  27. Poverty Law Center specializes in suing hate groups, vows to
  28. try to collect every penny in order to close down WAR, its
  29. newspaper, cable TV show, and 23 telephone hot lines. In a
  30. similar $7 million lawsuit in Alabama three years ago, Dees
  31. managed to bankrupt the United Klans of America for its role
  32. in instigating the shooting and hanging of a black youth. Said
  33. Dees of his latest victory: "The jury has spoken loud and clear
  34. that in this country the First Amendment guarantees the right
  35. to hate people and say what you want, but not the right to hurt
  36. people."
